How Sealy Builds Mattresses
Sealy’s primary differentiator is their coil system engineering. Their mid-range and upper collections use what they call Posturepedic Technology — a zoned coil support system where different sections of the coil unit use different coil gauges to provide different support levels across the body.
In practical terms: the area under your shoulders uses softer coils to allow the shoulder to sink slightly and maintain spinal alignment. The lumbar zone uses firmer coils to prevent the lower back from dropping. The hip zone balances between the two. This matters because your body doesn’t distribute weight evenly, and a mattress that applies uniform firmness across all zones forces your spine to compensate.
The comfort layers above the coil system — foam, gel foam, or latex — determine the feel of the mattress, not its support properties. A plush mattress and a firm mattress from the same Sealy collection have the same coil system underneath. The difference is in the foam layers between you and those coils.
Choosing a Firmness Level
Back sleepers generally do best on a medium-firm mattress. Too soft lets the lumbar zone drop; too firm creates pressure points at the shoulder blades and heels.
Side sleepers generally need a softer comfort layer to allow the shoulder and hip to sink, preventing the spine from bowing toward the mattress surface.
Stomach sleepers generally need a firmer mattress to prevent the hips from sinking below the torso, which creates lower back strain over time. Many sleep professionals recommend that dedicated stomach sleepers consider a different sleep position — we’re not going to tell you that, but it’s worth knowing.
Combination sleepers (changing position through the night) tend to do best on medium options that compromise adequately across positions.
We’ll ask about your sleep position before recommending a specific collection. If you have specific back, hip, or shoulder issues, mention them — they affect the recommendation.
Bring Your Partner
This is worth saying directly. A mattress that feels perfect for one partner may not feel acceptable for the other. Sealy offers split-firmness options in some king-size collections — two different firmness zones in one mattress for couples with different preferences. We can show you what’s available if that’s relevant.
