Recliners in Sikeston, MO
A recliner purchase is one of the few furniture decisions that’s almost entirely about fit to the individual person using it. A sofa can work for a range of people. A recliner that’s the wrong size for the person sitting in it — too tall, too wide, footrest that doesn’t reach the right leg length — is uncomfortable regardless of quality.
Fitting a Recliner Correctly
Seat height: When seated, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at approximately a 90-degree angle. A seat that’s too high pushes your knees up. A seat too low puts strain on getting in and out. La-Z-Boy produces recliners in small, standard, tall, and wide configurations to accommodate different body types — the “small” designation isn’t a quality downgrade, it’s a size designation.
Seat width: The seat should support your hips without pressing against them. Two to four inches of clearance on each side of your hips is comfortable. A seat significantly wider than your hip width means you can’t use the armrests naturally.
Footrest length: The footrest should support your full leg from knee to heel when extended. A footrest that ends at mid-calf forces you to hang your lower legs, which creates tension in the hamstrings over time.
We will not let you leave with a recliner that doesn’t fit correctly. That means you need to sit in it — adjusting height configurations if needed — before we write it up.
Manual vs. Power Recliners
Manual recliners use a side handle mechanism and body weight to recline. They’re mechanically simpler, have no motor that can fail, and don’t require a power outlet. They’re also not appropriate for users with limited hand strength, shoulder mobility issues, or anyone who has difficulty applying the side pressure needed to close the recliner.
Power recliners use a motor-driven mechanism controlled by a side button or remote. They recline and return at a consistent pace without physical effort from the user. They require proximity to a power outlet and have a motor that can eventually need service. For many users — particularly older adults or anyone with joint or mobility considerations — the power mechanism is the right call functionally, not just a luxury upgrade.
La-Z-Boy and Best Chair
La-Z-Boy is our primary recliner brand, and for most customers it’s the right answer. Their mechanisms are tested extensively, their size range is the broadest in the industry, and their warranty is one of the best available.
Best Chair is our secondary recliner option, primarily for customers interested in a wider custom fabric selection. Best Chair’s custom program offers hundreds of fabric options with shorter lead times than most custom furniture — typically six to eight weeks. If you need a specific color or pattern that doesn’t exist in La-Z-Boy’s standard upholstery options, Best Chair is worth the conversation.
