Sofas & Couches in Sikeston, MO

A sofa is the most-used piece of furniture in most homes and usually the most expensive thing in the living room. It’s worth understanding what you’re buying before you buy it.

What Separates a Good Sofa from a Bad One

The internal structure of a sofa determines how long it holds its shape and comfort. Most of what you can evaluate from sitting in a showroom model reflects the cushion fill — which is easy to make feel good on day one but degrades at very different rates depending on foam density and composition.

What you can’t evaluate from sitting is the frame and spring system beneath the cushions. This is where the meaningful differences are.

Frame construction: Kiln-dried hardwood frames are dimensionally stable — they won’t warp or crack as humidity changes seasonally, which is relevant in Southeast Missouri’s climate. Green lumber frames or engineered wood frames will eventually loosen at the joints.

Spring systems: There are three common systems. Eight-way hand-tied coil springs are the most durable and most expensive — individual coil springs tied in eight directions to prevent shifting. Sinuous wire springs (also called S-springs or no-sag springs) are mid-range and adequate for moderate use. Webbing only is the entry-level approach and the first system to fail under regular family use.

Flexsteel uses their Blue Steel system — a single steel rod running through the base of the frame, anchored at both ends, functioning as the spring support. It won’t sag, shift, or squeak over time the way coil systems can. It’s why Flexsteel offers one of the longest frame warranties in the industry.

Choosing the Right Size

Standard three-seat sofas run 84–90 inches wide. Apartment sofas run 70–76 inches for tighter spaces. Oversized sofas push toward 96 inches and above.

The rule of thumb for sofa sizing relative to your room: leave at least 18 inches between the sofa and a coffee table in front of it, and at least 30–36 inches of walking clearance between the sofa and any wall or opposing furniture piece. A sofa that fills the room looks good in a furniture store and feels wrong in your house.

Fabric and Upholstery

We carry sofas in fabric and leather options. For households with pets or young children, performance fabrics — tightly woven, stain-treated microfibers — hold up significantly better than standard upholstery weaves. We can show you the difference in texture and durability between fabric grades and help you choose based on your actual household, not just aesthetics.
